Under Regulation 7 of the
Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 every employer is required to appoint
a competent persons to assist them to meet their legal obligations by providing sound advice and guidance to enable them to comply with the requirements and restrictions placed on him by all current and pending legislation.
The Competent Person can be an internal appointment providing that the individual is regarded as competent in that he/she has had sufficient training and has the experience and knowledge to enable them to assist in undertaking the measures required by the legislation. However most organisations cannot justify employing their own Safety Officer and therefore look to use the services of a Health and Safety Consultant.
